After a summer of feeding on krill in Antarctic waters, Humpback Whales migrate north to sub-tropical waters where they mate and give birth. This painting captures a serene underwater scene of a majestic mother and calf swimming by a coral reef full of tropical fishes and table corals, highlighted by sunlight rays breaking the surface of the cobalt blue waters.
Inspired by the breeding migration of Humpback whales off the coast of Western Australia and conservation efforts to protect them from deep sea mining. I wanted to create an ethereal underwater scene in appreciation of these magical mammals, to capture a tranquil moment in time on our blue planet.
